ABSTRACT

The main aim of this report is to document all the technical training experiences I was exposed to in National Geohazards Monitoring Centre, Awka, Anambra State. The training/experiences includes Geohazards in the southeastern part of the Nigeria, especially in Anambra State, the application of Geographic Information System (GIS) in gully studies, and geotechnical mapping of gully erosion sites in Anambra state. The factors that facilitated erosion in the study area include substratum characteristics i.e. the geology of the area, climate, topography, lack of vegetation cover and human activity.  These factors have combined to produce gully sites in the area of study. These gully sites have developed by linear progression (Head-ward erosion) and Mass-wasting processes; such as (creep, slides, rock fall, slumping, debris flow, earth flow, and toppling failure).The Awka–Orlu uplands or cuesta, with its steep slopes and convex and concave hills, is underlain by unconsolidated and highly erodible Nanka Sand (Ameki Formation).  These two attributes, combined with aggressive climatic conditions, have triggered off a tremendous amount of gullying.  These gully sites were assessed based on their relation with the four major river drainage systems. The effective preventive and control measures presently adopted by individuals, communities and the government were assessed in the course of the study of the structures such as ripraps and storm drains and appropriate suggestions made for maintenance and control.
